Welcome back to all students, parents and teachers.

We will be posting information about upcoming events and activities, stay tuned!

Ice Bucket Challenge in Scoil Seanáin Naofa

A big well done to Fr Pat Greed our local Parish Priest and Board of Management Chairman and to Mr Eddie Horgan our school principal on their Ice Bucket Challenge on Friday afternoon last. Dressed suitably for the occasion as Indian chiefs the duet entertained our school community, parents and locals alike, bringing trickles of laughter reminiscent of a Christmas pantomime to the big yard on a sunny Friday afternoon. Ancient tribal makarah beats performed once again by the multitalented Fr Pat and Mr Horgan enhanced the uniquely rhythmic 'Rain Dance' extravaganza the likes of which have never before been heard of in Clonlara and which would not be out of place in Mardi Grais New Orleans!! Mr Griffin and Mr Raftery were ably assisted by Matthew Mc Inerney and this trio had the very desirable task of pouring the ice cold water over the two willing participants. Over €350 was donated by our pupils and staff for Motor Neuron Disease. We are delighted by this wonderful response for a very worthy case and thank Fr Pat and Mr Horgan for being such good sports. People like Pat and Eddie make the world is a far richer place and as the curtain came down on our first full week of the school year, unforgettable memories remain!

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL...............

Fáilte is fiche roimh gach mac máthair ‘gus iníon athair ag teacht ar ais ar scoil.

A big welcome to all our pupils who have returned after the summer break. Two groups in particular we would like to extend a céad míle fáilte, the first of which is our new two classes of Junior Infants! It is a special time for those children who are beginning on their journey of education. We will share many happy experiences with you and your parents over the coming weeks and years. We wish you all every happiness and success.
Also the second group we would like to welcome new pupils who have joined us up along the school. It's a responsibility for all our children to make new pupils feel at home. And finally to our dedicated and experienced staff, together we'll make the school year 2014-2015  another enjoyable and memorable one!

CONGRATULATING THE CLASS OF 2014 ON GRADUATING:

The pupils, teachers and staff would like to wish the Sixth Classes of 2014 the very best as they graduate from primary school and move on to other experiences. We have gotten to know them so well over the last eight years and wish them a fond farewell. We hope that they will settle well into their new schools. The behavior of the two classes has set a wonderful example to the other pupils. They worked hard over the last week on the School Fair and raised over €1,000 for charities. A big thank you to their teachers and all who donated time, products, produce and money.

Accelerated Reader Update:
All pupils from second to sixth class successfully took part in the Accelerated Reader Programme. Pupils took a series of STAR tests and then read books at their appropriate reading level, taking quizzes online. We have been monitoring their reading performance and are delighted with these overall results.

Accelerated Reader End of Year Summary:

Totals in our School year to date

Books Read 9,184
Words Read 197,029, 362
A big well done to all involved!
In September we look forward to introducing the two new Second Classes to this programme. We already have usernames and passwords set up. We will be taking our first STAR Test on the first week back.

Down Syndrome Fund Raiser:

We recently hosted a fund raiser for Down Syndrome Ireland in our school. It is a charity very close to our hearts.
Ms. O' Regan organised an 'Ice-Cream Fun Day' to raise funds. Ronan Woodhouse helped out by labelling posters, informing classes of the event and he was our M.C. on the day. Everyone had a great day and the ice-cream was delicious! A special word of thanks to Ms. O' Regan for organising such a worthwhile event. We raised €400 for Down Syndrome Ireland. Thanks to all who donated their time and money!

SECOND CLASS celebrate First Communion

A very big we'll done to all the children who made their First Communion on Saturday 24th May 2014 at St Senan's Church Clonlara. The word “Eucharist” means "Thanksgiving" and we extend a big thank you to all those involved in making the ceremony so special. The pupils of Second Class have been following the Alive-O Religious Education programme under the tuition of Mr Raftery. He did a wonderful job in preparing the children for this very special day. The parish preparation programme with Fr Greed and Fr Cleary offered parents and family the opportunity to be involved in their children’s preparation. The Parents and children attended a series of "Do this in Memory" Masses throughout the academic year. We also extend thanks to the choir comprising of 4th, 5th and 6th pupils and musicians/ singers Mrs Carey, Mrs Cusack and Mrs Purcell

Dylan Returns to Scoil Seanáin Naofa with Medals:

It is a source of huge pride to announce a very big well done to Dylan Prenderville of
Third Class on his recent achievements.
Dylan is a pupil in Mr Naughton’s Third class and has been in training very hard in
recent months for the recent DSAU (Dwarf Sports Association UK) Games. Dylan was
competitor 133 at the competition held in Birmingham last month and excelled in many
events .
In the relay event, he helped our country secure a bronze medal .Very few people have
the honour of representing Ireland in their sporting career but already our Dylan has !
He represented our school, parish, county and country with his amazing spirit, hard
work, talent and determination. A very well done to Dylan and his team mates as they
fought off very stiff opposition in the final. The best was yet to come for Dylan. He
claimed a gold medal in his individual freestyle swimming event and flew the tricolour
with pride. Dylan will soon be included in our “Hall of Fame”
We congratulate you and remind all our pupils to keep following their dreams.

CONFIRMATION:

CONFIRMATION CLASS 2014 Our sixth class pupils were all excellently behaved today, 7th March at the Confirmation ceremony at St Senan's Church, Clonlara. Bishop Kieran O'Reilly confirmed all the candidates and concelebrated the Mass with Fr Pat Greed (PP) and Fr Brendan Cleary (AP). This ceremony was a wonderful occasion for our school and parish community. We would like to thank Ms Burns, Mr Griffin, (Sixth Class Teachers) Mrs Carey, Mrs Cusack and Mr Horgan for all their hard work with the sixth class pupils and also preparing the choir. A big thank you to all the parents and sponsors. Also, we extend thanks also to the visiting musicians who give of their time for to make this occasion so memorable. PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT "Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen."

The Sacrament of Confirmation takes place in St Senan’s Church Clonlara, on Friday next 7th March at 15:00. Our Sixth Class pupils have gained a deeper understanding of Faith and the important role the Holy Spirit has to play as a guide to them as they become teenagers and beyond that into adulthood. They have been prepared to accept their faith for themselves through a series of four special Rituals: ‘Enkindling the Spirit’, ‘Moved by the Spirit’, ‘Called by Name’ and ‘Blessed with Oil’. These rituals help the candidates to examine the history of Confirmation and the role of the Holy Spirit in the Bible, as well as the practical ways in which the Holy Spirit’s action can be seen in today’s world, e.g. through charitable works. Possibly one of the most significant stages of the Confirmation ceremony takes place during the ‘Service of Light ’when parents symbolically pass their faith onto their son through the passing of their Baptismal Candle. We wish them every success on their faith journey.

LOCAL HISTORY PROJECTS SUBMISSION DATE:

All our pupils from Junior Infants to Sixth Class have once again been given the opportunity to take part in a Local History Project. In November last, all class teachers distributed the project sheets and currently many children are busy finishing off their work before submitting their work. Luckily, we have an ever growing and very informative archive of Local History thanks to the dedication and hard work of our pupils and older members of the community in this area. There are many fine examples of work from last year and we eagerly await the work of this years cohorts. All projects will be collected on Monday 24th February for reading and analysis. This very enjoyable and interesting scheme will conclude in early March with a prize giving ceremony. Thank you to all class teachers for their help and to Ms Fleming for organising the initiative and collating the scripts and creating our very own archive.

HAPPY ST BRIGID'S DAY

Beannachtaí na Féile Bríd oraibh!

Saturday February 1st is the feast day of our best known female patron saint, St Brigid. This week many classes learnt about St Brigid. Some classes read and then wrote stories about her life, other groups sang a hymn in honour of her, while some other classes were inspired to draw and paint pictures of her. There also were many beautiful St Brigid Crosses made. It is said that any house or boat with one of these reed crosses will be safe from fire. This tradition has been in existence in Clonlara NS for many years and it's great to see it being passed on to the younger people of the local community.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS PRAYER SERVICE:

A very big thank you to Fr Greed PP for visiting and all those who organised and prepared today's Prayer Service. It was a lovely school occasion. Firstly, Cillian read a short piece from the Bible for us. Next, Kate, Matthew, Clodagh, Tom and Orlaith all read Prayers of the Faithful. And finally Aobha read a Reflection. Fr Greed reminded the children of the importance of sharing and also he advised all the children to obey their parents and teachers. Next he told us all about St Blaise and he blessed the throats of everyone present.

MEDAL PRESENTATION TO FOOTBALL SHIELD WINNERS & RUNNER UP

On Thursday morning, 19thDecember 2013 our whole school assembled in the halla. After break we gathered for to meet with some very famous local players. Mr Horgan welcomed us all to the assembly and said that 2013 was a very lucky year for Scoil Seanáin Naofa, Clonlara and the county of Clare. In June of this year our school won the double being very fortunate to capture the Cumann na mBunscol Division 1 Hurling and Camogie titles.

John Conlon (All Ireland Senior Hurling medal winner), Nicky O’ Connell (All Ireland Senior Hurling medal winner), Cathal O’ Connell (U21 & All Ireland Senior Hurling medal winner), Shane O’Brien (U21 Hurling medal winner) and Colm Galvin (U21 & All Ireland Senior Hurling medal winner, All Star and u21 Player of the year for 2013) all came to present medals to our successful football teams. Two of our former pupils Darach Honan and Domhnall O’Donovan both rang Mr Horgan to apolgise for being unable to visit us on this occasion. Our Clonlara and Clare players all spoke to us about the importance of doing our best in all things. Our pupils were given an opportunity to ask questions and Aoife, Rachel, Becky, Shane and Jack all asked the players interesting questions. The lads answered the questions honestly and truthfully and presented the medals to our winning Football Shield Winners and Runners Up teams. Cillian O’ Brien winning captain was presented with the Shield.

The various trophies which our school teams won this year were displayed and Mr Horgan spoke with pride about our school and its wonderful tradition of GAA. Mr O’Connell, Mr Hickey, Ms Toomey, Ms Burns, Mr Griffin, Ms McMahon and Mr Raftery were thanked for coaching and helping our school eams. Flan Mullane (Chairman Clonlara GAA) thanked the teachers and the school for its work in promoting Gaelic games and presented a photograph of the Clare team. Mr Raftery thanked all the pupils, especially the players and supporters, along with their parents, Mr Joe Roche (Clonlara GAA Underage Coach), Mr Liam McCarthy and Mrs Marian Ryan for their work with the football team all year. Mr O’Connell fondly remembered having taught all the Clonlara players present and commented on their hard work and determination. This was great school celebration and one day which will live on in our hearts. We predict that many of our current pupils will continue this Clon and Clare tradition and we know there will be future Clonlara and Clare greats and will be inspired by today’s gathering.

John, Nicky, Shane, Cathal, Darrach and Domhnall we salute you!

A big thank you and well done to all involved.

October 2013 Mid-Term Break:

Scoil Seanáin Naofa will close today at 3pm for Mid Term Break. Our school will remain closed from Monday 28th October 2013 to Friday 1st November 2013 inclusive. We will reopen on the morning of Monday 4th November.

Halloween Safety:

We instruct all our pupils, past and present to keep on footpaths and roads. If no footpath is available, walk facing traffic and as far off the road as possible. One of the best parts to Halloween is choosing who or what to be. Dressing up in scary dark costumes is fun, but remember to wear bright/reflective high visibility jackets for motorists to see. A torch can also make night-time travelling much safer. Children should always travel in a group and look out for one another. Following these safety tips on Oct. 31 will help our pupils have an enjoyable night this All Hallows Eve.

School Fundraising: Colours Day:

In association with the Parents' Association we are having a fundraising Colours Day on Friday 25th for our school. All pupils are advised to wear colours and fancy dress clothing is optional.

School Fundraising: Christmas Cards:

All pupils in our school have been busy designing, drawing and colouring Christmas cards this week. In Association with the Parents' Association all cards are currently on route to the printers. We look forward to seeing all these cards and thank all those involved in this fundraising initiative.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal:

Once again this year Scoil Seanáin Naofa is a collection point for these boxes of joy. On Christmas morning our boxes will be opened by children in Africa and Eastern Europe. We thank the local organisers and everyone in our school community who took part.

Old Mobile Phone Collection:

We have been collecting old mobile phones in exchange for iPads for to be used by Special Needs pupils in our school. To date over 150 mobile phones have been collected. Many thanks to all those who helped out. Ms O'Regan organised this initiative and we are all delighted with both her hard work and the fantastic school wide effort. If anyone finds any more old mobile phones please continue to drop them into Ms O'Regan. Well Done to all involved.

School Mass Friday 11th October 2013:

Today all classes from Rang II to Rang VI attended a special school Mass at St Senan's Church, Clonlara. Fr Greed welcomed all the pupils, teachers, parents and other Mass goers. We were privileged to partake in the Mass by joibing the priests and congregation in remembering all parishioners. The Prayers of the Faithful were delivered by Clíonadh, Éabha, Clodagh, Aobha and Diarmuid. Cillian took us through the First Reading and Psalm. Tom and Rebecca brought up gifts for the Offertory and Jack read a deep reflection after many of our pupils received the Body of Christ in Holy Communion. Our choir sounded beautiful. Fr Greed reminded all children of the importance of trying to be the best you can in the classroom, school yard and at home. He advised us all to take time to play, pray, complete school and homework and partake in sport. Fr Cleary gave all members of our school community a very special blessing. He asked all the pupils to do as their parents and teachers ask. This Mass was a wonderful school occasion. We would like to thank Fr Greed, Fr Cleary and all the pupils for making this a memorable event.

Prayer for New School Year:

Lord Jesus, I give my hands to do your work. I give my feet to go your way. I give my eyes to see as you do. I give my tongue to speak your words. I give my mind that you may think in me. Confirmation 2013: St Senan's Church Clonlara

47 pupils of our pupils were sealed by the Gift of the Holy Spirit on Saturday 18th May 2013. These pupils are now united with God in a more powerful way. The confirmands all received the "mark," the seal of the Holy Spirit. We wish then every success on their continued faith journey. We thank their teachers Ms Burns and Mr Griffin for all their work in preparing their pupils.

The choir once again performed beautifully. All hymns were arranged excellently but many of the congregation particularly loved our version of 'I Will Be The Vine 'written by Liam Lawton. Mr Horgan, Mrs Carey, Mrs Cusack and Ms Eimear Purcell have to be commended in their fine direction and arrangements.

COME HOLY SPIRIT

"Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations. Through Christ Our Lord.

Amen."

SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE 2013

Rinne daltaí na scoile sár iarracht arís i mbliana. Bhí comórtaisí éagsula eagraithe ag na muinteoirí ranga i rith na seachtaine. Chualamar páistí ó Naí. Shóis. go dtí Rang VI ag labhairt Gaeilge go nádúrtha i saol na scoile. D’eagraigh gach rang dán gairid no amhrán beomhar agus bhí dea- am againn ag éisteacht da chéile. Fuair daltaí boinn(óir, airgead agus cré umha) agus teastais freisin. Bhi na múinteoirí go háirithe Mac Uí hArgáin an-bhródúil as pobal na scoile go léir. Bhaineamar taitneamh as an gceilúradh. Míle buíochas do Iníon Pléimeann a d’eagraigh gach rud dúinn. Is iontach an méid oibre a bhí idir lámha aici. Níl an féasta thart fós! Beidh ceoltoirí áitiúla ag teacht ar an Máirt seo chughainn chun seinm dúinne. Beidh ‘Cainteoir na Scoile Sóisear’ agus ‘Cainteoir Sinsear’ a fhoilsiú ansin. Táimid ag tnúth leis an gceolchoirm seo. Idir an dá linn bainigí tairbhe as Lá Fhéile Pádraig agus déanaigí iarracht na cúpla focail a labhairt ar mhaitheas ar dteanga.

Already, we are looking forward to more fantastic local history and artefact investigations next year.

Christmas Carol Singing 21st December 2012

All our pupils gathered after small break in the halla today and provided great entertainment for the whole school community. We heard a variety of Christmas songs old and new as well as some of the traditional Christmas carols. Mr Horgan was delighted with every class contribution. He reminded all children of the importance of giving and being kind this Christmas. This is good advice. We had a really great assembly and Santa Claus even made a guest aapperaance!
